Soils, Peatlands, and Biomonitoring
نویسنده
چکیده
Soils are three-dimensional (3D) natural bodies conSlStmg of unconsolidated mineral and organic materials that form a continuous blanket over most of the earth's land sUlface. At all scales of measurements, soils are exceedingly complex and variable in bio logical, chemical, physical, mineralogical, and electromagnetic properties. These properties influence the propaga tion velocity, attenuation, and penetration depth of elec tromagnetic energy, and the effectiveness of ground penetrating radar (GPR). Knowledge of soils and soil properties is therefore useful, and often essential , both in the design and operation of GPR surveys . In this chapter, soil properties that influence the use of GPR are discussed. Ground penetrating radar soil suitability maps are introduced. These maps can aid GPR users who are un£1miliar with soils in assessing the likely penetration depth and relative effectiveness of GPR within project areas. T his chapter cites studies that have used GPR to investigate soils. Also discussed are the uses of GPR to measure root biomass, distribution and architecture, and detect internal defects in trees.

Comparative ecology of vascular plant, bryophyte and testate amoeba communities in four Sphagnum peatlands along an altitudinal gradient in Switzerland
Monitoring tools are needed to assess changes in peatlandbiotic communities and ecosystem functions in response to on-going climate and other environmental changes. Although the responses of soil organisms and plants to ecological gradients and perturbations do not always correlate, peatland monitoring is mainly based on vegetation surveys. Testate amoebae, a group of protists, are important co...
متن کاملSoils of Peatlands: Histosols and Gelisols
Peatlands are a subset of wetlands that have accumulated significant amounts of soil organic matter. Soils of peatlands are colloquially known as peat, with mucks referring to peats that are decomposed to the point that the original plant remains are altered beyond recognition (Chapter 6, SSSA 2008). Generally, soils with a surface organic layer >40 cm thick have been classified as Histosols in...
متن کاملSeasonal Changes in Methanogenesis and Methanogenic Community in Three Peatlands, New York State
Fluctuating environmental conditions can promote diversity and control dominance in community composition. In addition to seasonal temperature and moisture changes, seasonal supply of metabolic substrates selects populations temporally. Here we demonstrate cascading effects in the supply of metabolic substrates on methanogenesis and community composition of anaerobic methanogenic archaea in thr...
متن کاملA Frozen Feast: Thawing permafrost increases plant-available nitrogen in subarctic peatlands
Many of the world's northern peatlands are underlain by rapidly thawing permafrost. Because plant production in these peatlands is often nitrogen (N)-limited, a release of N stored in permafrost may stimulate net primary production or change species composition if it is plant-available. In this study, we aimed to quantify plant-available N in thawing permafrost soils of subarctic peatlands. We ...
متن کاملHomoacetogenesis: A potentially underappreciated carbon pathway in peatlands
Due to anaerobic conditions, peatland soils store globally significant amounts of carbon and are an important source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. One component of anaerobic carbon cycling, homoacetogenesis (i.e., acetate formation from carbon dioxide and dihydrogen via the acetyl-CoA pathway), has rarely been quantified in natural environments because it is commonly viewed as being ther...
